Red tide report in Hong Kong waters
The Inter-departmental Task Force on Red Tide announced today (May 16) that a red tide was detected in Hong Kong waters in the past week. The red tide was detected by Marine Department staff in Victoria Harbour near Hung Hom on May 10. The red tide has dissipated and no fish mortality reports have been received so far. A spokesman for the Task Force said: "The red tide was composed of Noctiluca scintillans, which is common in Hong Kong waters and does not contain toxins." The occurrence of red tide is a natural phenomenon. The phytoplankton monitoring programme implemented by the Fisheries and Conservation Department will continue to proactively monitor the occurrence of red tides to reduce the possible impact on the local marine fish farming industry and the public.
